The QR code won't scan

Quick fixes when a phone camera doesn't pick up the code.

Most scanning problems come down to size, light or print quality.

Try these

  • Make it bigger. Keep the code at least 3 cm across for scanning up close, and bigger for walls, windows or anything seen from a distance. A rough guide: the code should be at least a tenth of the scanning distance.
  • Check the light. Glare from glossy paper, lamination or a shop window can hide the code. Matt paper and even light help.
  • Leave space around it. Don't crop the white border or print it over a pattern.
  • Print it crisply. For printing, download the SVG, which stays sharp at any size. A PNG stretched too far can blur.
  • Keep the contrast. Dark code on a light background, as it downloads. Don't recolour it.

Still stuck?

People can always type the link instead. The QR code poster prints it under the code. And if you've changed the survey, the code doesn't need replacing: it always points to the same survey.
