Stars, thumbs or smileys
The three ways people can answer, and which to choose.
Every survey uses one answer style. People tap once to answer.
The three styles
- 1 to 5 stars: the familiar rating. Your results show an average score out of 5.
- Thumbs up or down: a simple yes or no. Your results show the share of thumbs up.
- Five smileys: from very unhappy to very happy. Friendly, and easy for children or anyone in a hurry. Your results show an average out of 5.
Which to choose
- Use stars for "How was…?" questions, such as service, food or a visit.
- Use thumbs for yes-or-no questions, such as "Did you find what you were looking for?"
- Use smileys when you want to know how people feel, or when the people you ask include children.
It can't change later
Once the first answer arrives, the answer style is locked, along with the question. Otherwise a mix of stars and thumbs would make your results meaningless. To ask a different way, create a new survey. See Changing a survey once it's live.
